Annotations for My Way Home Is Through You

Lyric: Can’t find my way home
But it’s through you and I know
What I’d do just to get back in her arms
Annotation:
The speaker is exclaiming how dead set they are on returning where they belong, and that they aren’t afraid to “go through” whatever or whoever is in their way.

Lyric: They never had the time
Annotation:
PROPOSED SUGGESTION: Just states the same things as the next annotation.

Lyric: We’re not here to pay a compliment or sing about the government
Annotation:
The cadence and lyrics here are in reference to Billy Joels “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, a famous political song, to say that MCR isnt trying to make some big political statement with their music, they’re just singing what they know and feel.

Lyric: Don’t give a fuck about a Kennedy
Annotation:
Gerard Way has had a bit of an obsession with JFK throughout the years (with references in Three Cheers, Danger Days, Umbrella Academy, as well as other works), so it’s no surprise that there’s one more mention of him here as well.

Lyric: Do you want to hold my hand?
 Could you sign this photograph?
 Because I’m your biggest fan
Would you leave me lying here?
Annotation:
The first line is the singer asking something (in a mocking way) to a fan. The rest is him saying what fans usually say to their idols. Like how it’s awkward and a bit uncomfortable for artists. They don’t know them (fans) but they’re supposed to be there and ‘hold their hand’, ‘sign autographs and not 'leave them there’, feeling disappointed.

Lyric: Adolescent suicide
Annotation:
The band has been wrongfully accused of promoting suicide many times throughout their career most noticeably they where mentioned in a Daily Mail report about a 13 year old emo kid who killed herself https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/1935735/Popular-schoolgirl-dies-in-emo-sucide-cult.html

Lyric: Or oxycontin genocide,
Annotation:
There is currently a major painkiller addiction epidemic, which is especially prevalent in teens, the subject of the song. Mikey Way, the bass player of the band, was one of the many people who struggled with an opiod addiction.

Lyric: Gonna take off all my skin
Tear apart all of my insides when they rifle in
Mom and Dad think you’ll be saved
Annotation:
The writer is determined to show the ones who came to “save him” that he isn’t going to be an easy fix. He’ll show them how big of a mess they’re dealing with, how they’ll regret why they came here. The ones who threw sympathy at him didn’t know what they were aiming for. It was a whole other dimension of difference that they’ve never seen, albeit they never tried to look for it. Overall, this could be linked to the perspective and determination to a teenager; one who is passionate and in love with being a mental patient. They aspire to receive attention for their insanity, or perhaps to give a little pizzazz to the very monotonous life of being a working student.

Lyric: Well, my gun fires seven different shades of shit
So what’s your favorite color, punk?
Annotation:
The term “beating seven shades of shit” is one of British origin, meaning to inflict great damage upon them. It was first used in W.T. Tyler’s literary gem, “Rogue’s March”: Fetch your arse in here, you black bastard! Kick seven shades of shit out of you! You’ll be wearing your fucking tail like a wog’s necktie, blood and gravy, right around your necktie, blood and gravy, right around your neck! Come on! (Page 128) Gerard has cited Britpop as one of the influences behind Danger Days, so this line is certainly one that channels this inspiration.

Lyric: They’re going to medicate your lives
Annotation:
Some people see their lives as going from one drug to another to stop something that is abnormal, like depression or anxiety. Pretty funny that the band’s next album, Danger Days, places the band as superhero-type characters who try to take down a placebo company which profits off of medicating the masses into compliance.
